Resources, events for students staying on campus and in Durham over winter break

Staying at Duke through winter break? Here’s what’s open and closed on campus, as well as some festive holiday events in the Triangle.

Duke Dining

From Dec. 20 to Dec. 22, several Duke Dining vendors in the Brodhead Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., including Farmstead, Ginger & Soy and Il Forno.

All Duke Dining locations will be closed Dec. 23 to Jan. 2, with the exception of the Nasher Museum Cafe. On Jan. 3, several vendors will reopen, including Sazon, Tandoor and The Skillet in the Brodhead Center. Marketplace will be closed from Dec. 20 through Jan. 10.

Campus facilities

While Brodie Recreation Center will be closed from Dec. 19 to Jan. 8, Wilson Recreation Center will be open through break, with the exception of closures on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Libraries will close starting Dec. 23 and reopen on Jan. 3, though they will be closed on Jan. 7 and 8.

Student Health closed on Dec. 17 at 12 p.m. and will reopen Jan. 3. Students will still be able to access triage nurses during this period by calling (919) 681-9355.

Campus mail services will be closed Dec. 23, Dec. 26, Dec. 30, and Jan. 2, but otherwise will be open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on business days.

Durham festivities

Want to see the holiday lights? Purchase tickets to Holidays in the Park at the Museum of Life and Science for a stroll or train ride around a trail of light displays and holiday music. Tickets are available for $16, or $19 including the train ride. This event takes place each night from Dec. 21 to Dec. 23, and from Dec. 28 to Dec. 31.

Festive live performances will be put on at the Durham Performing Arts Center throughout the holiday season. Shows include A Magical Cirque Christmas on Dec. 19 and The Hip Hop Nutcracker on Dec. 23.

For students staying through the New Year, a New Year’s Eve party will be taking place at United Skates of America Raleigh, including food, a balloon drop and a countdown to midnight.

WRAL First Night Raleigh is also hosting a New Year’s celebration beginning at 2 p.m. on Dec. 31. Live performances will take place at City Plaza and various indoor locations, before a fireworks show and the Raleigh Acorn Drop to ring in 2023.
