Peaches, Duke's famous calico cat, fatally struck by car

Peaches, Duke's calico cat, died Wednesday afternoon after a car hit her near the Animal Protection Society of Durham. She was 10 years old.

Anna Li, Trinity '18, received a call yesterday from APS, who saw the incident occur and said Peaches was killed immediately.

The campus icon, who had her own Facebook group of caretakers that Li created, lived in a heated home near Keohane Quad on West Campus. Members of the Duke community took care of her since 2016, when they found her as an unnamed stray.

"She was truly an amazing cat and totally irreplaceable. She brought joy to so many people," Li said. "There might not be another cat in the world that has loved so deeply and been loved by so many people."

The group plans on cremating Peaches and holding a memorial service for her.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
