Duke secured ninth place in the most recent U.S. News and World Report Best National Universities rankings, an improvement from its 12th place spot in the rankings that were released last year.

Duke shares its No. 9 spot with the California Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University and Northwestern University. For the 11th consecutive year, Princeton secured the first place spot, followed by a three-way tie for second place between Columbia, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Yale University, Stanford University, the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania fill the remaining spots ahead of Duke.

In the 2020 rankings, which were released in 2019, Duke tied with Johns Hopkins for the No. 10 spot; in the 2019 rankings, Duke was ranked eighth.

Duke ranked 12th in Forbes' American Top Colleges list this year, falling three places from its 9th place spot in Forbes' 2019 rankings.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
