Duke announced Wednesday afternoon that the 437 students who remained on campus can stay past May 11—but for a fee.

All students currently residing on campus are approved to stay until May 11, but students may apply to remain in residence halls until May 31 with applications opening April 13 and due April 24. Beginning May 12, there will also be a fee of $38 per night to stay on campus, wrote Joe Gonzalez, assistant vice president of student affairs and dean for residential life, in an email to affected students.

The Housing Assignments office will send an application link to affected students on Monday, and students who are approved to stay past May 11 are subject to relocation.

Gonzalez mentioned that for assistance during the COVID-19 crisis, the Duke Student Assistance Fund offers monetary support for students with  “unexpected expenses such as airline tickets for relocation, temporary housing, food, and technology for online learning.”

To be eligible for aid, students must be in financial need and enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate, graduate or professional at Duke.

In regard to public life on campus, Gonzalez mentioned that wearing masks is also recommended. Students who are in need of a mask may request one here

Effective since April 6, the mailroom in the Bryan Center has limited its opening hours in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19, he added. The center will now be open for pick-ups from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only.
