As if Durham hasn’t already been hot enough, a Heatwave is coming next week.
Each year, Duke University Union’s campus concerts committee puts on its Heatwave concert at the end of the first week of classes. Rapper Rico Nasty will be headlining this year’s concert on Krzyzewskiville Aug. 30. The FLONERS—from Duke’s Small Town Records label—will open for her.
“We are in fact having Rico for Heatwave and are super excited about it!” wrote junior Max Miller, chair of DUU’s campus concerts committee, in a Facebook message.
Rico Nasty, a 22-year-old rapper from Maryland, is known for songs like “Smack a Bitch,” “Countin’ Up” and “Poppin.” She was featured as a member of XXL’s 2019 Freshman Class, which highlights up-and-coming hip-hop artists.
Rico Nasty has released four albums in the past three years, and will begin the Nasty Tour in Australia in January 2020. Her most recent album, Anger Management, was released on April 25.
Last year’s headliner, Snakehips, was chosen because the DUU Campus Concerts committee recognized that “based on the past two years of student survey data for LDOC, rap and EDM are the two most popular genres on campus,” according to Dylan Posner, Trinity ’19, former chair of DUU campus concerts. This year’s committee has followed suit, choosing hip-hop and R&B performers to kick off the year.
The FLONERS—a hip-hop and R&B duo made up of Kofi and Carlito—are from the student-run label Small Town Records. They write and produce their own music, and they’re “ready to take their ambition to the next level,” according to their bio on the label’s website.
British electronic music duo Snakehips headlined Heatwave last year. They performed after Apollo J and jiggy riKO from Small Town Records.
