A 16-year-old teenager was found dead in a car at Duke University Hospital this morning.
The Durham Police Department is currently investigating the possible homicide after receiving a call around 12:30 a.m. The Duke University Police Department is assisting DPD with the case, DPD spokesperson Kammie Michael wrote in an email to The Chronicle.
Police have identified Duwayne Clay Jr. as the teenager. He was found with a single gunshot wound in the back seat of a white Honda Accord parked in front of the hospital, Michael wrote.
Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations, wrote in an email to The Chronicle that "the shooting did not occur near Duke Hospital and that the victim was brought there from another location."
Michael added more details.
"It appears that Clay was transported to the Duke Hospital area by an unknown driver, who apparently left the scene before police arrived," the police spokesperson wrote.
Schoenfeld told the News and Observer that the driver was in a stolen car.
Clay was a student at the Southern School of Energy and Sustainability until he withdrew in November, Durham Public Schools told Sarah Krueger of WRAL.
Police are trying to locate where the shooting took place, and no charges have been filed at this time.
