Forbes has named Duke University one of the top employers in the nation.

The University checked in at No. 30 overall on Forbes’ list of “America's Best Employers 2019" and Duke University Health System checked in at No. 170. The University was only bested by two others in the education category—Stanford University and Harvard University. This is the fourth year in a row Duke has been named on the list.

Trader Joe's ranked No. 1, with Southwest Airlines, Lilly, Costco, Garmin, Google and Stanford rounding out the top seven rankings, in that order. The rankings are for companies with 5,000 or more employees.

“External recognition helps to validate what we believe about our Duke colleagues and our work environment,” said Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president for administration, in a release

Forbes based its rankings on anonymous survey data from 50,000 people, asking 35 open-ended questions about their work. They were asked about factors such as working conditions, pay and development opportunities.

In its “America’s Top Colleges 2018" rankings, Forbes dubbed Duke as No. 10 overall. That list puts Harvard at No. 1, followed by Yale University, Stanford, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, the California Institute of Technology, the University of Pennsylvania, Brown University and Dartmouth College.

“Although Duke is constantly exploring opportunities to improve, we have some of the most talented individuals on the planet working in one of the best environments possible," Cavanaugh said.
