Letter: Duke, make the light rail happen

To the Editor:

I urge the Duke community to make the light rail happen—for Duke, for Durham, for our region.

Duke’s failure to proceed, as of today, with Durham, Chapel Hill and UNC to make travel by light rail possible for our students, staff and faculty, hospital patients and visitors, residents, and guests is disturbing. Duke can find a way to make transit work—as did UNC Hospitals, UNC, Durham and Chapel Hill. Duke’s refusal to date to join with the community it is a part of demonstrates blindness to the need for public transit options for Durham. Duke’s intransigence is also painfully ironic as Duke’s refusal to act on this issue is occurring just as the federal government has issued the “Black Friday” report on global warming—a document that can only be read as urging us all to reduce dangerous carbon emissions such as those that come from automobile use.

As a member of a Duke family and a resident of Durham for over 40 years: I know we can do better than this. Duke, please make this happen.
