Spooky season is in full swing here at Duke as students have begun planning their costumes and making plans for Halloween night. While many students head to Chapel Hill for Homegrown Halloween, a Franklin Street celebration that welcomes thousands of attendees, there are plenty of other options in the triangle for a fun night.
Movie lovers will be delighted to know that the Bull City Film Festival is showing a collection of award winning short horror and thriller films from film festivals around the world. The event starts at 7 p.m. and costs $10 to attend, popcorn included. The new horror movie "Halloween," a remake of the 1978 classic, is also playing in theatres this weekend, and it will surely draw a huge crowd on Halloween night. The movie has received glowing reviews.
If watching movies doesn’t feel festive enough, several Triangle-area venues will be hosting Halloween-themed trivia nights. In Chapel Hill, Tobacco Sports Road Cafe is hosting a horror movie themed trivia night, starting at 7 p.m. In Raleigh, World of Beer will host trivia based on the Halloween episode of "The Office." Those who attend are encouraged to dress up as characters from the show.
In Raleigh, the Haunted and Twisted History Tour begins at the Governor’s Mansion and stops at multiple different landmarks around the city. The tour starts at 6 p.m. and is focused on ghosts, hauntings and other paranormal activity that has occurred around Raleigh.
Halloween can also be a night for comedy. Watts & Ward in Raleigh is hosting a comedy show called “A Comedy Experiment”. The headliner is Mike Mello, who has opened for DL Hughley, Ralphie May and Dave Chapelle, among others. The event is $5 and starts at 8:30 p.m.
For students who missed the state fair or can not get enough carnival fun, there will be a free Halloween Carnival in Carrboro from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The event will feature carnival games, rides, and much more.
However, going out on Halloween is not the only option for students. Halloween falls on a Wednesday this year, which means many students will likely have school work they need to be doing. Hanging out with friends in the common room, catching up on sleep, or watching some classic Halloween movies are all great options for the night.
Even on a weeknight, many Halloween options exist on and off campus. Many students will end up on Franklin Street, especially freshman who want to see what it is all about. However, for those looking to branch out and try something new, these events are all affordable and fun ways to spend the night. It can sometimes be difficult to get off campus, but Halloween night is the perfect time to explore, especially with all the amazing events happening in the area.
