President Price declares for NBA Draft after one year at Duke

Following an abrupt end to Duke's season with a loss to Kansas, the Blue Devils' offseason began with news that has become familiar to Duke fans.

President Vincent Price announced his decision to forgo his infinite remaining years of eligibility and declare for the NBA draft. Price becomes the ninth president in the past 94 years to leave Durham after his freshman season. Price announced his decision via the Duke Students snapchat account.

“Y’all named West Union after Brodhead but didn’t name anything after me,” Price snapped. “I’m out.”

Price's freshman season got off to a shaky start. After making his college debut against the Robert E. Lee statue at the end of August, Price worked to shake off the rust and acclimate to the speed and physicality of the college game.

The former University of Pennsylvania provost's play took off during the Blue Devils' seven-game winning streak in ACC play as Price starred in wins against DACA and minimum wage. But the freshman raised his game another notch during Duke's game against Pittsburgh, announcing Tim Cook for commencement speaker.

He finished the season increasing tuition by 3.9 percent, joining Richard Brodhead as the only freshmen during head coach Mike Krzyzewski's tenure to put up thousands of dollars of tuition increase.

ESPN's Jonathan Givony projects Price to join Nannerl Keohane and Keith Brodie as Blue Devil freshmen selected near the top of the NBA draft. With the versatility to play both the three and the four positions at the next level and an improving jump shot, he projects to be a potential franchise cornerstone.

“I’m excited to take the next step in pursuing my lifelong dream of playing basketball at the highest possible level,” Price said in an official release. “With that said, I’ve loved my time at Duke. The brotherhood is a real thing and I’ll always be part of the bond between former, current and future Duke players. I want to thank my teammates, coaches, family and friends for the unwavering support I’ve received as I pursue my dream.”

Some students, however, were not pleased with Price’s departure announcement.

“I’m tired of these one-and-done presidents,” one student said. “We’re a team, not a stepping stone for presidents to go to the NBA.”
