UPDATED: Gardens visitors robbed of $100 at gunpoint Sunday afternoon

A visitor of the Doris Duke Center at Duke Gardens was robbed at gunpoint Sunday, according to a recent DukeALERT. 

The incident took place at approximately 5 p.m., with no injuries reported. The suspect allegedly approached the visitor with a silver handgun and asked for money before leaving the scene.

In an email to volunteers, Chuck Hemric, director of volunteer services at Duke Gardens, wrote that less than $100 was taken and that Gardens Director Bill LeFevre is working with administrators to investigate. Hemric noted that the robbery took place at the visitor's desk.

According to the DukeALERT, the suspect is a thin, black male with dreadlocks and a height between 5 feet 9 inches and 6 feet. During the encounter, the suspect wore a ski mask along with a pink striped long-sleeve shirt and dark pants.
