As O-Week begins and the school year starts up again, Recess curated a playlist that will get you in the mood to enthusiastically tackle the fall semester and embrace everything Duke has to offer. Listen to it on the C1 during your morning commute or when you’re needing a study break—we promise it’ll lift your spirits.

Billy Joel, “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)” – Perfect for packing boxes full of those Target Dorm Essentials and never looking back at your lame hometown, which you’ll miss in a few months. It’s also, coincidentally, the only redeeming part of Billy Joel’s career.

Kanye West, “School Spirit” – Enjoy this cut from the "old" Kanye, complete with a chipmunk-soul sample and the phrase “oh hecky naw,” while putting on your letterman jacket and skipping your morning class.

The Rolling Stones, “19th Nervous Breakdown” – Picture this: you’re in Perkins for the fourth night in a row, nervous breakdowns abound, and it’s only the first week of classes. Slow down, grab a cup of coffee from Vondy and listen to this classic tune by the Rolling Stones.

The Hollies, “Bus Stop” – For all the hours spent waiting for the C1 in rain, snow and shine, with 6,500 of your closest friends. Who knows—someday you might marry one of them.

Pinegrove, “New Friends” – Equally relevant for first-year students looking to make new friends and upperclassmen who messed up with their old ones, Pinegrove’s anthem to meeting new people is a cathartic singalong. What’s the worst that could happen?

Martin Solveig & Dragonette, “Hello” – Maybe you just popped into that frat party to say a quick “hello” to your friends––Recess wants you to stick around, though, and enjoy the festivities before the school year truly begins.

Vampire Weekend, “Campus” – Awkward encounters after your first back-to-school Shooters experience are inevitable. Listen to this as you skirt around Abele quad, hoping to avoid said dreadful encounter.

The Cure, “Friday I’m in Love” – The first week of classes always feels impossibly long, especially after the three months of relaxation that summer (hopefully) provided. So when Friday finally rolls around, well...we’re in love.

The White Stripes, “We’re Going to Be Friends” – Whether it’s about someone you met during O-Week or your random roommate, the phrase “I can tell that we are going to be friends” is bound to be uttered sometime after move-in.

Oasis, “Wonderwall” – It wouldn’t be a college dorm without those four chords wafting through every hallway from an earnestly strummed acoustic guitar. You know that guy.
