Letter to the Editor

I am a die hard Duke fan, class of '71. I attend basketball games regularly and love all the drama. Monday night, it was not the heartbreaking loss for the team that upset me as much as it was the fact that, on Martin Luther King Day, an African-American student was not chosen to sing the National Anthem. I am not one of those "political correctness" scholars, nor am I even an academic, but rather a social worker who has spent my life working with people of all races. As I sat next to an African-American couple at the game, I wanted to lean over and say, "I'm sorry," after the National Anthem was sung. Hopefully, whoever chooses the singers for games in the future will start to look at what day it is and who they are choosing.
