Dear Editor,
In reference to the Duke Chronicle article regarding Professor Jerry Hough:
On May 14th, President Brodhead and Duke administrators received a letter from the Black Faculty Caucus Executive Committee noting that "we believe it necessary and appropriate for Duke to issue a public response to his commentary in a way that affirms the University's commitment to diversity, inclusion, and the values that attach to these objectives." Thus, we are pleased to see the University's clear and direct statement in response to the comments made in The New York Times by Political Science Professor Jerry Hough. We continue to believe that the best remedy for offensive speech is more speech, and especially institutional speech that aggressively affirms the inclusive values of the Duke University community.
Sincerely,
The Executive Committee of the Black Faculty Caucus
