Back in Durham for the annual K Academy fantasy camp, former Duke guard Nolan Smith's week took a twist Wednesday night when at least one Durham police officer drew his gun during a traffic stop.
Smith was issued a warning ticket for a window tint violation, and he acknowledged on Twitter that his windows are 4 percent tinted.
According to a write-up of the incident provided by Durham Police Department public affairs specialist Kammie Michael, Smith was pulled over at 11:23 p.m. Wednesday for "an observable window tint violation" on his Chevrolet Tahoe on Morreene Road near U.S. 15-501.
The write-up states that Smith did not pull over for several blocks, leading officers to approach the car with caution when he came to a stop in a parking lot.
"Two officers approached the vehicle—one on the driver’s side and one on the passenger side," the write-up reads. "One of the officers unholstered his weapon as a safety precaution because officers were not able to see into the back of the vehicle, which was heavily tinted."
Smith reacted to the incident on Twitter early Thursday morning, stating that he had immediately rolled down his windows and cooperated with police officers. He added that shortly thereafter, the weapon was put away and the police officers became relaxed upon recognizing the former national title-winning point guard.

According to the police write-up, Smith had not filed a formal complaint.
Correction: The original version of this story stated that the tinting on Smith's car was legal. A visible light transmission of 4 percent is not within the N.C. Department of Transportation's specifications. The Chronicle regrets the error.
