Duke men's golf ties for shortened Bandon Dunes Championship Title

Golf is a game of momentum. The Blue Devils haven't been able to find a lot of it the last two years, but appear to finally be putting it together.

Duke shared the team title of the weather-shortened Bandon Dunes Championship with Missouri Sunday after high winds shortened the event to 36 holes. The Blue Devils and Tigers finished at one-under-par after the two rounds at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore.

Sophomore Alex Matlari paced Duke, finishing tied for third at three-under-par 141 on the par-72 course and senior Turner Southey-Gordon was not far behind, using his experience to finish at one-under-par 143 and help lead the Blue Devils to their highest finish in the last two seasons

“I couldn’t be more excited for the guys,” head coach Jamie Green told GoDuke.com. “It’s been a little while since we notched a W. We played in some pretty challenging conditions the last two days. The themes were all about patience, focus, persistence and being positive. Those guys did that to a T. It was a total team effort. Certainly with Alex and Turner, who both played some pretty key roles with consistency over the two rounds.”

Matlari's four-under-par 68 Saturday in the second—and eventual final—round highlighted the week for Duke, as the sophomore used the round to tie for the tournament lead with nine birdies in 36 holes and record the best finish of his career.

Southey-Gordon was much more consistent in the two rounds, carding a 71 on day one and a 72 Saturday on his way to the seventh top-20 finish of his career. Freshmen Adam Wood and Jake Shuman and junior Motin Yeung all finished tied for 33rd at four-over-par 148, but all had one round near even par that contributed to the Blue Devils' team score.

Sophomores Max Greyserman and Andrew Bieber tied for 59th and 68th, respectively.

Duke will return to the course this weekend Sunday at the Blue Devil Shootout on its home course at Duke University Golf Club at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club.
