Kim Cates integrates herself into student social life

Owner of the popular Duke watering hole Shooters II, Durham resident Kim Cates has learned the ins and outs of Duke's undergraduate population.

This is one entry of the "Ten People to Watch" list in July's Towerview.

One of the first things freshmen learn is during orientation week—the fastest route to get to Shooters II Saloon, the popular bar and dance club is run by manager and owner Kim Cates.

Shooters has had a love-hate relationship with Duke students. Some students trek out to Shooters regularly on a Wednesday Night (see the Duke Dictionary) while others prefer the often-crowded Saturday night rush. Many students are even Facebook friends with Cates. I actually met her boyfriend one night, riding the Shooters bus from West Campus to the bar, showing the proximity between those who run Shooters and the students themselves.

This past year though, students got on Cates' bad side after students caused "extensive property damage." Cates increased the price of entry as a result.

So if you're planning on attending the nightclub regularly, it's worth shooting Cates a Facebook friend request. At the very least to keep track of price changes, at most to get a glimpse at one of Durham's most vivacious and notorious characters.
