Watch List: Multicultural Christmas

Although many people decorate their abodes to mark the holidays, the Salazars fuse Colombian and southern Christmas traditions, creating a unforgettable celebration that lasts for weeks.

“It’s a big deal and we have a really good time doing it, but it’s nice when it’s all done,” junior Julian Salazar said.

Salazar said getting ready for Christmas takes at least a full month.

“We have 15 wreaths and one huge wreath, and then eight trees each with individual decorations,” he said. “We also set up a giant nativity scene and a couple of smaller ones throughout the house.”

In many Latin cultures, Christmas is one of the biggest celebrations of the year. A traditional Colombian rendition of buñelos is one of Salazar’s favorite aspects of the holiday season. Buñelos are balls made of cheese and fried dough, and thinking about them made Salazar visibly salivate.

While Christmas is a big celebration, New Year’s is the real party.

New Year’s at the Salazar's is the place to be, and definitely one of the biggest festivities of the year.

Salazar noted that typically “100 people come to the house, mostly family but some friends too. We’ll stay up all night and dance until six in the morning.”
