The second meeting of Duke Student Government will be its last this year without first year senators.
At the DSG meeting Tuesday evening, President Stefani Jones, a senior, announced that there are 48 first years running to be a senator in the 20th year of DSG.
“We have a ton of people running for freshman senate,” Jones said. “It is great to have students so excited for DSG.”
Although the majority of the meeting was spent focusing on internal matters of the senate—including approving the previous meeting’s minutes, presenting legislation to amend house rules and approving the meeting schedule for the rest of the year—Vice President for Academic Affairs Ray Li, a junior, said he used the weekend to connect with student leaders from other schools.
Student government representatives from every school in the Atlantic Coast Conference gathered at the University of Pittsburgh for a leadership conference. Among the topics discussed was Duke's implementation of gender neutral housing.
Li said that the conference was successful, and he hopes to help organize future gatherings of student government leaders semiannually.
Junior Derek Rhodes, vice president for Durham and regional Affairs, presented legislation for the creation of an institutional advancement student advisory group.
The committee will collaborate with the Alumni Association and the Duke Forward campaign. Duke Forward is a fundraising campaign designed to foster continued innovation at the University.
“Fathoming ways by which students might interact in significant moments of Duke University history, such as the Duke Forward campaign, is paramount to ensuring the development of a vibrant campus culture that reflects Duke’s status as a local and national leader,” the statute reads.
It was passed by unanimous consent.
