Brandon Connette shines in scrimmage

Brandon Connette had been Duke's running quarterback in the past, but he may have a new role on this year's squad. During a 95-snap scrimmage, the red shirt sophomore was on the receiving end of a 15-yard Sean Renfree touchdown pass, and then ran 36 yards for another score.

Renfree had a successful scrimmage in his own right, completing 14-of-21 passes, with the touchdown to Connette and an interception. Backup Anthony Boone completed 5-of-10 passes, but the best quarterback performance belonged to freshman Thomas Sirk. Sirk had the best completion percentage of all the quarterbacks, going 12-for-19, threw for 162 yards, and connected on two touchdowns.

Outside of the quarterback position, two newly converted wide receivers, Desmond Scott and Garett Patterson, both put in good performances. Scott, the former running back, caught a team best six passes while Patterson, a former defensive back, recorded five catches for 80 yards and a touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, defensive backs Lee Butler and Tony Foster came away with interceptions, while linebacker Deion Williams recovered a fumble. Defensive lineman Michael Mann had one sack and a forced fumble.
