Duke senior wins Rhodes Scholarship

Dunnmon Headshot

Senior Jared Dunnmon was selected as one of just 32 recipients of the Rhodes Scholarship this weekend.

Dunnmon was chosen among 837 applicants from 309 colleges and universities for the prestigious award. Dunnmon is the 43rd student in Duke's history to receive the scholarship, according to a Duke news release. He plans to research renewable fuels at Oxford University in England before pursuing a career in energy policy.

A native of Cincinnati and an A.B. Duke Scholar, Dunnmon will graduate in the Spring with a mechanical engineering major. He previously was a recipient of Goldwater Scholarships in Science, Mathematics and Engineering.

"The major challenge for my generation is to develop innovative technological and economic solutions that address the realities of dwindling resources without jeopardizing those that still remain," Dunnmon wrote in his Rhodes application. "I want my life's work to address what I believe to be the most difficult aspect of this challenge—making environmentally and economically sustainable development possible on a global scale by providing accessible energy from renewable sources."
