Maryland road trip not fruitful

Duke Field Hockey could not knock off the No. 2 team in the country, Maryland (12-1, 4-0 in the ACC), in College Park, Md., Saturday.

Freshman Emmie Le Marchand scored her fifth goal of the year late in the second half to put the No. 17 Blue Devils (6-8, 0-4) back in the game. But Terrapin Jill Witmer hit the back of the net just two minutes later to give Maryland a 3-1 lead that it would hold until the final whistle.

Duke traveled to Washington, D.C., to face No. 9 American (11-2) Sunday. The result was more of the same: Again the Blue Devils lost 3-1.

Sophomore Devon Gagliardi tallied Duke’s lone goal in the game’s 50th minute off of an assist from freshman Caashia Karringten.
