Taco Diablo may arrive on campus by Friday

The new Mexican dining concept Taco Diablo could drive up to campus as early as Friday night.

At the Duke University Student Dining Advisory Committee meeting Monday night, Taco Diablo Owner Ryan Kennedy, Trinity '05, brought various foods for the committee members to test in anticipation of bringing the eatery-which operates out of a truck-to campus within the next few weeks.

Kennedy served the group samples of tortas, burritos, tacos, tamales, sopas and quesadillas-, all of which will potentially be offered by Taco Diablo.

DUSDAC members said they liked the food and thought it would fit well on campus.

"I thought it was great for a late-night option," said junior Jason Taylor, co-chair of the committee.

The new dining concept could travel between East and West Campuses, and will therefore be able to move to different locations on campus as needs arise. DUSDAC members flagged the truck as a possible solution to the lack of late-night food options on East.

"I'd love to find a pocket where there's a lot of [pedestrian] traffic but few dining options," Kennedy said.

He added that a Web site for the eatery will launch soon, noting that he hopes it will be ready by Thursday. The site will list operating hours and eventually might include promotion information and a real-time GPS tracking system to let students know exactly where the truck is on campus at any given time.

"I might do a 3 a.m. taco run, a T-shirt give away or a free taco for your birthday," Kennedy said, describing possible promotions for the new business.

Taylor said DUSDAC is happy to be partnering with Kennedy.

"I think he'll be really receptive to what the Duke student body wants," Taylor added.

DUSDAC member Dave McMullen, a senior, said the eatery is a great example of collaboration between the University and Durham.

"This is an ideal Duke-Durham relationship," McMullen said. "A young Duke alum and a Durham-based restaurant."

In other business:

DUSDAC members discussed the possibility of bringing a new thought-boosting drink, Brain TonIQ, to Duke Lobby shops.

Representatives from the Duke-Durham food drive came to request funding. The Duke Global Medical Brigades also discussed an upcoming charity event that will raise money for medical supplies, a doctor and building renovations for impoverished areas in Honduras, where students will be traveling later in the summer.
