Off Campus... and the Livin' is Easy

Lofts at Lakeview New and flashy, the Lofts at Lakeview will catch anyone's eye. Granite counter-tops, indoor parking, two pools, a 24-hour fitness center and yoga classes are just some of the amenities the Lofts offers. Watch out though, the perks come with a price, literally. But being within walking distance from the hospital, Chipotle and Dunkin Donuts certainly boosts its appeal. Grade: B+

The Belmont Apartments A tried and true Dukie favorite, the Belmont Apartments have distinct pros and cons. Pro: live here, and most of your neighbors will also be Duke students. Con: with gates that are often open and a universal security code, many people know safety is a legitimate concern at the Belmont. On the plus side, the social scene here is great-word has it the Belmont pool is a happening place when the sun's a-shinin'. Grade: B

Erwin Apartments It's a popular Duke senior destination, and if parties, low rent, big rooms, a free bus to campus and close proximity to Ninth Street and George's sound appealing, Erwin Apartments might be the place for you. A few cautionary tales however-rumor has it the walls are thin, and peace-and-quiet may be hard to come by. Grade: B

Houses Off East One can't forget the off-campus houses scattered throughout the Trinity neighborhood. Some might be conveniently close enough for you to get to class by reliving your younger days and taking the C-1 with the bright-eyed freshmen. Although living with friends in a big house might be fun, think about the extra problems of renting a house versus a more manageably sized apartment. Grade: D-

West Village Apartments The new kid on the block, the West Village Apartments have a lot to offer, including a locale close to the Main Street social scene. But driving is the only feasible form of transportation to and from campus. The fitness center and newly completed pool bring an upscale feel to the American Tobacco Company's old warehouses. Warning: many apartments don't have bedroom walls that reach the ceiling, could make things awkward if your roommate brings someone home for the night. Grade: C+
