After Pitt Loss, Will Duke Rise To No. 1?

Another one bites the dust.

On the same day that No. 2 Wake Forest knocked No. 10 Clemson out of the undefeated ranks, No. 1 Pittsburgh's dream of a perfect season was vanquished by No. 20 Louisville, leaving the Demon Deacons as the only unbeaten team in the country. We can only assume that head coach Dino Gaudio's squad will jump to No. 1 in the Associated Press poll, in which it was No. 2 last week.

But what about the ESPN/USA Today Poll?

The coaches placed the Blue Devils in the second slot last week, above Wake Forest, even though Duke has one loss. One week later, the Blue Devils will have added a road ACC win and a home win over a top-15 team to their resume--but we still expect Duke to stay in the No. 2 position and for the Demon Deacons to rise to the top spot. After all, Duke was just four votes ahead of Wake Forest last week and, quite logically, voters prefer undefeated teams to those that have lost once--plus, Wake beat a top-10 team on the road. Indeed, we will see a new No. 1 Monday, but, in our opinion, it almost definitely won't be the one Duke fans are hoping to see. Do you agree?
