In Thursday's editorial, "Our loss of will," the independent Editorial Board cited a speech by Reynolds Price sixteen Founders' Days ago. The phrasing used to capture the way in which it was delivered, however, was careless and insensitive.
Though the offense was unintentional, the Board neglected to consider how the idiom could be construed. I have apologized to Professor Price on behalf of the Board, and I would also like to apologize to our readers.
