Days worth celebrating

I love finding reasons to celebrate anything. When anything remotely good happens, I use it as an excuse to celebrate. Back from Fall Break? Time to celebrate. My roommate finally cleans up the sticky orange juice that spilled in front of my fridge? Celebrate with screwdrivers. I didn't fail my [insert subject] midterm? Time to celebrate, despite the fact I have another midterm tomorrow.

But better than individual events to celebrate are those annual, monthly or even weekly excuses to party. Trashy Tuesdays, Wet Wednesdays, Thirsty Thursdays: all legitimate excuses to celebrate. No excuses are needed for Friday or Saturday. And I just can't think of superb alliterations for Sunday or Monday. If you do, I encourage you to write a letter to the editor.

Every year, we celebrate a few arbitrary days. Birthdays are great-the day you were born-definitely a day to remember (or should I say not remember?). New Year's Eve is a great celebration of when we choose to change what number year it is. Independence Day is the perfect time for fireworks, unhealthy food and all-day drinking. And gracias to my amigos south of the border for Cinco de Mayo! And who doesn't love Halloween with all those ladies' costumes that cover up only slightly more skin than Miley in Vanity Fair magazine.

But I propose we celebrate more. Choose an arbitrary day of the month. Thank God it's the first Tuesday of the month. I'm so happy it's the 28th!

But some other annual holidays can make great holiday celebrations.

For Columbus Day, you can celebrate by discovering a new bar. Arbor Day is best celebrated by drinking from wooden goblets (oh the irony!). Leif Erikson Day (he's my Norwegian ancestor, had to give him a shout-out) is Oct. 9. I didn't miss it, drinking aquavit and eating raw fish all while telling the EU to bugger off because I didn't want to join its ranks. And who doesn't want to celebrate Law Day May 1 by breaking some sort of law?

For you real adventurers out there, I encourage you to use international holidays. Kiribati Youth Day, Aug. 10, is a great day to celebrate being young and stupid! March 2, Lavity Stoutt Day, comes directly from the British Virgin Islands, and is a great day to celebrate with Stout. Battle of Boyacá's Day is Colombia's Independence Day, so celebrate with Colombia's largest (legal) export, coffee! Bastille Day could perhaps be my favorite, July 14. Build and destroy your own model prison with nothing in it after you get belligerent on French wine. [Insert snooty French laugh]

What it all boils down to is finding ways to enjoy each and every day. If you want to celebrate something, Google the date, and you'll be able to find a ridiculous holiday. For example, today is Eggplant Day in France, so celebrate with an eggplant martini (surprisingly they exist). Or for you humanitarians out there, today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, so strap on your social entrepreneur boots and get out there with the ONE campaign or something.

It's fun to love life. So join me every day in celebrating whatever it is you want to celebrate.
