Paulus, Henderson, Scheyer named captains

Senior Greg Paulus and juniors Gerald Henderson and Jon Scheyer were named captains of this year's Blue Devil squad, head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced in a statement Friday.

"We are excited to have these three men as our team captains," Krzyzewski said. "They have each grown into outstanding leaders on and off the court and we are looking forward to watching their growth continue."

Paulus previously served as a captain as a sophomore, when he shared the position with DeMarcus Nelson and Josh McRoberts. Henderson and Scheyer are first-time captains.

Paulus has a career average of 9.9 points and 4.1 assists per game.

Henderson has posted 9.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, and he led the team in dunks and blocks last year.

Scheyer, who came off the bench as the sixth man last season, has averaged 11.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in his career. His 86.7 percent free-throw clip is second in Duke history to J.J. Redick.

The appointment of three captains seems to be a change from Krzyzewski's position last fall, when he said that having three captains the previous year had "diluted" the leadership role.

Nelson, a senior, was the lone captain of last year's team.

"The captaincy of our team wasn't elevated to the stature that it should be, to the level it should be," Krzyzewski said last October. "It was diluted a little bit."
