Duke police investigate alleged LDOC rape

The Duke University Police Department is currently investigating allegations that a female student was sexually assaulted by another student after a party in a Keohane Quadrangle dormitory last week.

Lt. Sara-Jane Raines, administrative services executive officer for DUPD, reported that the two walked back to the woman's dorm room together at about midnight April 26, after the Last Day of Classes festivities had concluded.

Both students were under the influence of alcohol, and the woman was unable to recount most of the details that precipitated the alleged rape, a police statement stated.

Police reported that the two attended a party in which alcohol and marijuana were used before returning to the woman's room.

Duke investigators searched the man's room Wednesday for photographs, video tapes, cameras, drugs and the woman's belongings, the Raleigh News & Observer reported Thursday.

The male student told DUPD officials that he did not have sex with the woman that night.

"I am confident that once the Duke police, who I have the utmost confidence in, have completed their investigation, they will come to the exact same conclusion I have come to, and that is my client is 100 percent innocent of these allegations," Steve Sitkoff, a lawyer, told local television station WRAL.

John Burness, senior vice president for public affairs and government relations, told the News and Observer that the University is currently looking into the case. He was unsure if the University had punished the students for the party.

DNA samples have been taken from both students, according to the News and Observer.

No charges have been filed as of Friday, and a DUPD police officer told The Chronicle that there was no new formal information to release on the case as of 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Because the alleged incident occurred on University property, the Durham Police Department is not involved in the investigation.
