Senior crashes on Flowers Dr.

A car crashed into a tree Tuesday afternoon on Flowers Drive, the Duke University Police Department reported.

Leanora Minai, senior public relations specialist for DUPD, said Daniel Peake, a 22-year-old senior, was driving a friend’s Mercedes on Flowers between Chapel Drive and the Allen Building when he took a sharp turn. He hit the curb and crossed the road before running into a tree at about 3 p.m., she said.

“Investigators believe he was driving well over the speed limit,” Minai said. The speed limit on Chapel Drive is 25 miles per hour.

Minai said both airbags in the car deployed and the car was substantially damaged by the impact. Peake was admitted to the hospital with non-critical injuries and friends said he was not seriously hurt.

Police are investigating whether Peake was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. His friends, however, said they had seen him shortly before the car crash and they did not think he had been drinking.

Peake did not respond to requests for comment.
