Duke's men's and women's swimming and diving teams began their respective season's Saturday, each losing to Maryland (4-0, 3-0). The Maryland women outpaced the Blue Devils 147-85, while the men were defeated 139-98.
A bright spot for Duke, four Blue Devils swam to first place finishes including a pair of freshman in their first collegiate meets.
The most successful race for Duke was the 200 IM in which freshmen Jay Ashenfelter and Alex Sidelnik finished first and second, respectively.
The Blue Devil women placed first and second in the 200 butterfly. Seniors Lauren Hancock and Amy Halligan notched a times of 2:04.44 and 2:05.38, respectively, in the event.
Duke will continue its season this weekend when it hosts UNC-Wilmington Saturday at 2:00 in the Taishoff Aquatic Center.
