Tennis teams cruise at ACC tourneys

Both the men's and women's tennis teams had no trouble protecting their No. 1 seeds in the ACC tournament.

The No. 9 men's team cruised to a 4-0 victory against Maryland, and the No. 3 women downed N.C. State 4-0. Each match was played at the Milbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh.

The men improved to 18-5 on the season, and will play the winner of the Virginia/Wake Forest match at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Blue Devils created a 1-0 advantage by taking the doubles point when No. 41 Jason Zimmermann/Ludovic Walter won 8-2 over Pierre Rudder/Rory Theis and No. 48 Jonathan Stokke/Peter Shults defeated Scott Peters/David Reichsfeld.

In singles action, No. 30 Phillip King, No. 34 Michael Yani and Walter all easily won their matches, giving up only six games combined.

The women won their 24th match in 26 tries this season. In doubles action, Duke took the point by winning the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.

Saras Arasu, Hillary Adams and Kate Blaszak were victorious in the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 positions, respectively.

Arasu won 6-2, 6-3 over Carmen Romero, Adams defeated Daniel Stadelmann 6-2. 6-1 and Blaszak completed the sweep with her 6-1, 6-2 victory over Myrna Bawona.
