Vehicles entered, belongings stolen
Between 1:48 and 2:20 p.m. July 11, eight vehicles were broken into while parked in the R. David Thomas Center parking lot. CD players, CDs, a CD sound system and components, car speakers and miscellaneous tools were stolen, causing total damage of $4,080.
Suspected felon arrested
Police responded to the Hospital cafeteria in reference to a suspicious person who had been reported earlier in the 7200 Duke North waiting room July 3 at 5:16 p.m. Subsequent investigation revealed the person had in his possession a Duke General Food pass. There were numerous felony warrants for his arrest in South Boston, Va.
Daryl Dwayne Glass, of 309 Powell Rd., South Boston, Va., was arrested and placed under a $100,000 bond. Glass could not be reached for comment.
Vehicle tampered with
An employee reported that he saw two juveniles tampering with a Duke vehicle in the Blue Zone parking lot July 14. Duke officers observed pry mark damage of $50 to the tool box, but nothing was stolen. The employee was only able to give a partial description of the two juveniles. One was a black man, 16 to 18 years of age, 5'10" tall and 165 lbs., wearing a white shirt and blue shorts with a white stripe in them. The second was a black man 16 to 18 years of age, 5'10" tall and 175 lbs., wearing a white shirt and white shorts. The officers searched the area to no avail.
Computers swiped
An employee reported that between 6 p.m. July 5 and 8 a.m. July 9, someone entered the unsecured Fox Center in the Fuqua School of Business and stole two $1,500 IBM personal computer systems (model 6360-37U).
Wage fraud alleged
An employee in the Duke Clinic's Purple Zone reported at July 10 that two different temporary employees contracted through Monarch Temporary Services had falsified their timecards on five separate occasions and received paychecks based on the false time submitted. Each employee allegedly received over $1,000 in pay from this fraud. Both employees have since been terminated from their jobs. The case is under investigation.
Assault reported
At 4:45 p.m. July 16, an employee reported that she was assaulted and threatened by a co-worker at noon on the same day in Perkins Library. Warrants are pending.
Threatening call received
A supervisor in the Duke Clinic's Green Zone reported at 10:53 a.m. July 10 that he had received a threatening phone call from a relative of one of his employees. The case is under investigation.
Camera pilfered
An employee reported that between 5:30 and 10 p.m. June 28, someone stole his unsecured Nikon 950 black digital camera and associated cables and cards, totaling $2,000, from Duke North Operating Room #3.
Electronics nabbed
Between 7 and 7:54 a.m. July 2, an employee's and a visitor's vehicles were broken into while parked at Mt. Sinai Road, Gate #23. The person broke out $400 of windows and stole a $50 Restek gym bag, a $350 Garman global positioning system, 45 CDs valued at $500, a $100 Verizon cellular phone, an EPA federal employee badge, $400 cash, credit cards and a drivers license. The suspect was described as a white man, 20 to 35 years of age, 6' tall, wearing a white dress shirt, long dark pants and driving a light blue small vehicle about the size of a Honda.
Possessions snatched
Three employees reported that between 10 a.m. and 4:40 p.m. July 11, while their vehicles were parked on Circuit Drive, someone broke out the windows and stole a Sony CD player, multi-purpose tool, gas card, Clarion tape deck (model ARX5470) and CD changer (model CDC635), causing $1,660 of damage.
Nurse assaulted
A Duke police officer witnessed a woman assault a nurse with her open hand in the Emergency Department at 2:45 a.m. July 11. The nurse received no lasting injury. The woman, Joann Marie Harris, 38, of 1202 B Avery Street was cited by the officer for the assault and given a court date of Aug. 13. Harris could not be reached for comment.
Meal, parking vouchers filched
An employee reported that sometime between June 26 and July 1, someone entered a secured office in the Children's Health Center and stole 76 meal vouchers worth $304 and 180 24-hour parking passes worth $1,080. There were no signs of forced entry, and the theft is under investigation.
Goods thieved
An employee reported that between 4:30 and 5:01 p.m. July 8, while his secured vehicle was parked on LaSalle Street near Erwin Road, someone stole his $215 JVC DC player, $250 JVC CD changer, 600 CDs valued at $800 and $2 cash. It appears that a prying device was used to enter the vehicle.
Possessions stolen
An employee reported that between 7:08 and 8 p.m. June 29, while her vehicle was parked in Parking Garage 2, someone broke out the $250 rear vent window and stole her $400 AM/FM in-dash radio and CD player, $250 in-dash wiring and the $150 face plate bracket that held the CD player.
Sisters found fighting
Duke officers responded to the parking entrance to the Emergency Department dock in reference to two women fighting June 29 at 10:30 p.m. Officers arrived, observing the two women, who are sisters, punching each other. Both sisters, Tessa Marie Jones, of 2214 Rada Dr., Durham, and Pamela Jones Ayers, of 409 North Maple St., Durham, were charged with an affray. Their court date will be Aug. 3. They could not be reached for comment.
