Volleyball receives bid to NCAAs

After a surprising run to the finals of the ACC tournament, the volleyball team learned yesterday that its season is not yet over.

The Blue Devils (21-12) received an at-large bid to this year's NCAA Championships, beginning with a first-round match in Minneapolis, Minn., Friday at 6 p.m. against Arizona State.

"We're thrilled for the chance to be able to compete in the NCAA tournament," coach Jolene Nagel said. "This team has worked hard to get this opportunity. Right now, we are focusing on how we can beat Arizona State."

In only her second year as coach, Nagel has the Blue Devils in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1994. Duke is competing in a four-team draw in the West Regional for the right to go to the Sweet 16. If the Blue Devils get past their first-round game against the Sun Devils, they will face the winner of Robert Morris and host school Minnesota in the second round Saturday.

Duke's bid comes on the heels of its upset of top-seed Georgia Tech in the semifinals of the ACC tournament.
