From staff reports
The field hockey team split a pair of non-conference road games this weekend, beating Harvard 3-0 Saturday before falling to Northeastern 4-1 Sunday.
Sophomore forward Melissa Panasci paced the Blue Devils (3-3), scoring in each contest to improve her total to 11 tallies in only six matches. Sophomore forward Mandy Schott and freshman forward Emily Ford both added goals Saturday to support senior goaltender Heather Moles, who recorded her 16th career shutout. Duke dominated the game, outshooting the Crimson (1-2) 15 to three and posting nine corners against Harvard's one.
Northeastern grabbed the lead early in Sunday's match, as the Huskies' Keri Bettenhauser fired an unassisted goal past Moles after only six minutes had elapsed. Panasci responded 12 minutes later, assisted by seniors Tamara Gehris and Nicole Osmers, but the Huskies seized the advantage again before halftime.
Bettenhauser and Denise Nasca bolstered Northeastern's lead in the second half, tacking on a pair of goals to finish the scoring at 4-1.
The Blue Devils lost despite staying even with the Huskies statistically. Duke attempted 13 shots, only one less than Northeastern, and garnered one more corner than the Huskies, 6-5.
The Blue Devils begin Atlantic Coast Conference play Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m., when they host defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion North Carolina.
