Women's track sets personal bests at Blue Heaven

Sending a limited squad of four athletes to North Carolina's Blue Heaven Invitational, the women's track team ended its winter season setting two personal bests.

Junior and Wethersfield, Conn. native Christine Gregorski finished eighth in the shotput with a distance of 18-1-1/2 and placed sixth in the long jump with personal best of 15-11.

Senior Renae Stahl's second place showing in the long jump marked the second consecutive week in which she tied her personal best. Stahl set the school record witha leap of 18 feet a week ago.

The two other Blue Devils who competed were freshman Meghan Mitchell and sophomore Kristin Stout. Mitchell placed fifth in the shotput, with a distance of 34-10-1/4, while Stout ran fourth in the 55-meter hurdles clocking a time of 8.73, avenging early season losses to some opponents in her effort.

Assistant coach Scott Yakola was satisfied with the team's effort.

"I am certainly pleased with their effort, especially this week, they suffered no letdown after the ACCs," Yakola said.

While Stahl, Stout, Mitchell and Gregorski competed last weekend, the remainder of the team rested and prepared for the spring season which begins Mar. 19-20 at Wake Forest.

The indoor season featured significant achievements by the freshman class, which broke five freshman records in total. Liz Hanly set the freshman record in the 1000-meter with a time of 3:02.85.

"It was a tremendous season, and we are much further ahead at this point than we were a year ago," said Yakola. "Everyone set personal records, and we had tons of people finish in the top five."

Mitchell broke the shotput record with a throw of 36-4-1/2, and Veronica Davi now owns the 200-meter record with a pace of 27.64.

Joanne Marlin set a record in the 500-meter with a time of 1:20.85, and Betsy Keever staked claim to Duke's 800-meter record with a 2:21.27 clocking.

Another impressive effort by the Blue Devils came from two-mile relay team of Hanly, Jeanne McFeely, Joanna Boettinger and Elizabeth Berghausen who ran the event in the second fastest time in school history, and tallied three of the school's five fastest times.

"It has been a great season," said head coach Michael Forbes. "They exceeded our expectations."
