Women take sixth, men finish last at ACC swimming championship

The women's swimming team garnered 207 points to finish sixth at the 1993 Atlantic Coast Conference championships at North Carolina's Koury Natatorium Saturday. The Blue Devil men tallied 182 points to place last in the ACC title's eight-team field.

North Carolina's men's and women's teams led from start to finish last week to claim both ACC championships. The North Carolina women, ranked 17th in the nation, won the title for the third consecutive year by outpointing 18th-ranked Virginia.

The Tar Heels finished with 838 points, far ahead of the Cavaliers (664). The rest of the field included N.C. State (604.5), Florida State (504) and Clemson (371.5). Maryland finished last with 158 points.

The Tar Heel men pulled off an upset by finishing ahead of 11th-ranked and undefeated Virginia. North Carolina, ranked 19th, took first with 735 points to edge the Cavaliers (654). North Carolina State took third with 565 points, followed by Florida State (444.5), Clemson (444) Georgia Tech (198), Maryland (192.5) and Duke.

The Duke women had a strong showing in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Kim Robertson swam the event in 17:30.94, good for ninth place.

Kira Dale finished just behind her in tenth at 17:35.68. Abbey Jones took 12th with a time of 17:45.15.

Pam Morris was a championship finisher, taking seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.64.

Matt Senfield stood out for the men. Senfield swam the 100-yard backstroke in 50.86 to finish fifth, then took fourth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:49.80.

Jeff Anton was also a championship finisher, placing fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.16.
