Have you ever noticed that campus activists are perpetually “outraged” at whatever is the perceived “offensive” issue du jour?
So begins our nation’s Constitution. Yet, I submit, few Americans today appreciate just how profound and revolutionary this document is.
I firmly believe that the most vulnerable and voiceless among us are the most deserving of our protection.
I hope that this column will not be a vain voice in the wilderness but rather the impetus for students to reflect upon their own thinking and the way in which they argue with others, particularly those they disagree with. It is incumbent upon us to raise the level of campus dialogue to a standard consistent with the intellectualism we aspire to as a university. Duke deserves nothing less from her students.
Under my editorship this coming year, I wish to see the editorial page be a lively marketplace for the exchange of ideas, with daily contributions from a diverse swath of student viewpoints.
The greatest obstacle to the advancement of black Americans isn’t racism or past injustices but rather the black community itself.
