For fall break this year, I hit up the most popular place for Duke students to get away, excepting D.C.: Asheville, N.C.
I rarely laugh out loud and actually mean it. No, it’s not because I think I have a holier-than-thou sense of humor, where I shun anything that’s not up to my comedic standards.
The melodica is a unique instrument. Similar to a harmonica in that it uses a free reed, but airflow is controlled by a keyboard instead of relying only air blown through a mouthpiece.
As I pulled into one of West Union’s not-high-enough, not-low-enough high tables Sunday night, there was a hitch in my pre-meal routine.
I watch movies more than I probably should. Although I can’t say exactly when I fell in love with film, movies have been a part of my life as long as I can remember—whether it was watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” every Christmas or being forced to see “To Kill a Mockingbird” by my grandmother, my childhood was dotted with films I would love more and more as I got older.

Being that it is summer break, the last thing I want to do is write an editor’s note. Now don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy editing and managing arts and media content for tens of people—if I didn’t, I wouldn’t have taken this job.
If you are one of those well-rested, or otherwise non-morning folk like myself, I tell you, if you need a change in your life, start doing mornings.
I’ve been told I’m a “funny person.” This sometimes confuses me, because I wouldn’t necessarily describe myself as someone inherently inclined to comedy.
Recent events have once again rendered Duke’s campus turbulent and fraught with strife. Protests against what many students consider a lack of accountability on the part of the administration have divided students into several camps – for every protester at the Allen building, there seems to be an equal and opposite counter-protester posting aggravated comments on Yik Yak.
Writing the Meaningful Editor’s Note William Faulker once said according to some middle-aged woman’s blog, “I only write when I am inspired.
Well, Recess readers, since I have the privilege of writing the post-Spring Break editor’s note, I feel obligated to write—at least a little bit—about my own Spring Break.
At the camp I have gone to—and eventually staffed—since I was nine years old, there is nothing to protect you from the unexpected...no matter who you are.
This past Sunday night, 34 million Americans and I watched the Academy Awards. It was a four-hour slog for the most part, with highlights few and far between.
As we are all aware, Duke’s dining program is ranked consistently as one of the top in the nation.
These past few weeks, I’ve been fairly sentimental, and I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because I feel like my life is always moving, and I don’t have a chance to stop and savor the world and people around me.
