Q&A: Administrators discuss ongoing conversations with sit-in students, approach moving forward

Following administrators’ announcement Monday afternoon that they will no longer negotiate with the Allen Building sit-in students unless the students voluntarily vacate the building, The Chronicle’s Claire Ballentine and Amrith Ramkumar spoke with Larry Moneta, vice president for student affairs; Steve Nowicki, dean and vice provost for undergraduate education; and Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations, about the announcement, the decision to give sit-in students amnesty and the ongoing negotiations with students.

Durham City Councilwoman Jillian Johnson, Trinity '03, and Sendolo Diaminah, Durham Public Schools Board of Education member, visited the students sitting in the Allen Building in protest of the treatment of workers at the University Sunday morning at approximately 9:30 a.m.

After a three-day hiatus, the NCAA tournament returns Thursday evening with the Sweet 16 in the South and West regions. The Blue Devils will take on top-seeded Oregon in the second game of the night from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. Fourth-seeded Duke never got going in its Sweet 16 clash with top-seeded Oregon, trailing by double-digits for almost the entire second half after Duck point guard Casey Benson nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to start the period and Chris Boucher got a transition dunk to stretch the team's five-point halftime lead to 10. Oregon went on to win 82-68 to punch its ticket to the team's first Elite Eight since 2007 and end the Blue Devils' season.

Following Saturday's Board of Trustees meeting, in which a 3.8 percent increase in undergraduate tuition was approved, The Chronicle's Rachel Chason and Amrith Ramkumar spoke with President Richard Brodhead and David Rubenstein, Trinity '70 and chair of the Board of Trustees, after the meeting about the tuition increase, other meeting notes and the University's long-term goals.



2016 DSG endorsement policy

The Chronicle will be publishing endorsement letters for the 2016 Duke Student Government elections from Monday Feb. 22 to Monday Feb. 29. The positions of President, Executive Vice President and Student Organization Funding Committee Chair are available for endorsement. No endorsements will be published Tuesday Mar. 1 or Wednesday Mar. 2, the days of the election. The final deadline for endorsements will be 11:59 p.m. Sunday Feb. 28.
