The West Union vs. The Loop: a taste test in The Chronicle's office

(08/26/16 4:02am)

Duke’s campus has been eagerly anticipating the opening of the West Union, but are its eateries really that different from other campus options? To compare the West Union with another popular campus eatery The Loop, The Chronicle held a taste test in its office. Participants were assistant news editor Samantha Neal and two non-staff members—junior Bonnie St. Charles and sophomore Analese Bridges. All participants were blindfolded and then given a sample of three classic college dishes—pizza, pasta and cheeseburgers—one from a West Union eatery, Il Forno Italian Kitchen for the pizza and pasta and The Farmstead for the burgers, and one from The Loop. The three had to guess which location each food item came from and then share their thoughts on it. Here’s what they had to say:

It's time for a change

(08/26/16 4:01am)

Duke is constantly changing—just this week a new class of freshmen moved into their homes on East Campus and West Union (finally!) opened its doors, bringing a wide range of food options to campus. And The Chronicle is no different—this year, we’re making a change as well. Starting Monday, we will print three days a week—Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays—with new content still published online daily. Towerview will no longer be in magazine format but instead will be a print supplement to the regular paper each month, and we’ll publish long-form stories in the Towerview section on our website.

FAC Board co-chairs share advice for first-years, reminisce on O-week

(08/23/16 4:11am)

Few freshmen can forget their arrival on move-in day, when a hoard of upperclassmen in neon shirts ambush their cars to help them move into their new dorms. These first-year advisory counselors facilitate freshmen's transition to college life and provide advice on everything from the best classes and eateries to making Duke feel like home. Seniors Andres Camino and Jay Rathinavelu, who serve as FAC Board co-chairs, shared their tips for navigating O-week and beyond with The Chronicle.

'Reckless statements and erratic behavior': Duke prof. Peter Feaver denounces Donald Trump, signs open letter from top GOP national security officials

(08/10/16 4:00am)

Fifty of the nation's top Republican national security officials signed a letter Monday declaring that they will not vote for Donald Trump, calling him unfit for the presidency. They noted that Trump “lacks the character, values and experience” to be president and “would put at risk our country’s national security and well-being.” Peter Feaver—professor of political science and public policy at Duke and former director for Defense Policy and Arms Control on the National Security Council in the Bush White House—was among the signatories, which also included many former top aides or cabinet members for President George W. Bush. The Chronicle sat down with Feaver to discuss his decision to sign the letter and his role in the 2016 election.
