Chron Chat: Duke football faces uncertain road ahead without Sirk

It may be the offseason, but a lot of news has come down in Durham in recent weeks surrounding the football program. Duke has its new offensive coordinator in Zac Roper after the departure of Scottie Montgomery to East Carolina, and the Blue Devils' 2016 schedule was released in late January. Just last week, head coach David Cutcliffe inked his best recruiting class in program history. But things took a turn for the worse early this week. The Chronicle's football beat writers take a look at some of the topical questions as the build-up to the start of spring practice continues.







Depth issues front and center for Duke big men in loss at Clemson

GREENVILLE, S.C.—Heading into its third ACC road game, Duke had proved that it can manage without Amile Jefferson. After losing to Utah Dec. 19—just two games after Jefferson fractured his foot in practice—the Blue Devils had won five straight games and appeared to be playing some of their best basketball of the season.


Extra Point: Duke football vs Indiana

In a wild finish that saw Duke quarterback Thomas Sirk leave the game with an MCL sprain in overtime, the Blue Devils defeated Indiana 44-41 ending a 54-year bowl-victory drought. After Sirk led Duke on a 13-play, 78-yard touchdown drive to force the game into overtime, the Blue Devils secured the win when Ross Martin converted a 36-yard field goal and Indiana’s field goal kicker Griffin Oaks missed a 38-yard field goal that could've extended the game.





XFactor: Duke basketball vs Utah

The Blue Devils return to the court Saturday afternoon against Utah in Madison Square Garden after beating Georgia Southern 99-65 Tuesday night. The showdown with the Utes will be Duke’s first real test without senior forward Amile Jefferson, who suffered a fractured foot in practice and will be out indefinitely. The Chronicle takes a look at one player from each team who could be the difference maker in the Blue Devils’ upcoming matchup:
