Duke professor Adrian Bejan develops theory that laws of physics drive wealth inequality

Adrian Bejan, J.A. Jones professor of mechanical engineering, was recently published in the Journal of Applied Physics for his explanation that wealth inequality is governed by constructal law, a theory in physics about the generation of design in nature. The Chronicle’s Rob Palmisano spoke with Bejan about his discovery and its future implications.

As director of Rock The Vote, Heather Smith—Trinity ’98 and a member of the DukeEngage National Advisory Board—has helped millions of young adults vote in their first presidential elections, shaping Rock the Vote’s reputation today as the largest non-partisan, non-profit voter registration organization in the country. The Chronicle’s Rob Palmisano spoke with Smith about her role with the organization and the ongoing significance of its mission.






Senior Emma Wright reflects on her Appalachian Trail solo hike

Senior Emma Wright recently completed a solo hike of the entire Appalachian Trail going northbound from Georgia to Maine. From February 29 to July 14, she hiked a total of 123 days from Georgia’s Amicalola Falls Visitor Center to Maine’s Mount Katahdin with only four days of rest in between—barring injury—averaging eighteen miles a day. The Chronicle’s Rob Palmisano communicated with Emma over email about the inspiration behind her solo hike and her experiences along the way.

New Divinity School dean Elaine Heath discusses goals, commitment to diversity

Elaine Heath, former McCreless professor of evangelism at Southern Methodist University and co-founder of the Missional Wisdom Foundation, was named the new dean of the Duke Divinity School in March after a national search. She will take over the position from interim dean Ellen Davis, who has served since Richard Hays retired last August. Heath discussed her goals and the future of Duke Divinity with The Chronicle's Rob Palmisano over email.
