Race at Duke: a conversation

(11/24/15 6:15am)

After a year that produced more than its fair share of hate-based scandals both on and off Duke’s campus, tensions between minority groups and the University administration have been slowly building, though no direct action has been taken against any administrators as was seen at the University of Missouri earlier this month. With this in mind, Towerview asked Kerry Haynie, associate professor of political science and African and African American Studies, a series of questions regarding the current status of race relations and the University’s handling of the various incidents.

McCaffrey continues family legacy of athletic excellence for Duke football

(10/29/15 5:12am)

Throughout head coach David Cutcliffe’s eight years at Duke, his M.O.—aside from re-energizing a near-dead football program—has been recruiting hidden gems, players who the rest of the football world deemed a step too slow or an inch too short, and giving them the platform and opportunity to succeed.

Letter from the editors

For many students, the all-nighter is a dreaded last resort—the path you take when all others have been taken from you, the only choice left when you face your personal failings in the miserable silence of Perkins after midnight. At first glance, through the lens of a Duke student, Jimmie Banks is nobody. He walks about in his same dark blue t-shirt, black pants and boots every day, building to building, one of thousands to don the same uniform and complete their various, often unappreciated tasks. But just like every other person to check an emergency light, vacuum a carpet or fix a faulty bulb, he is someone.

Forgive me Father, but you're an idiot

Outside of toiling away for The Chronicle—I kid, I kid (not really, please send money)—I work in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. And by work, I mean I do nothing for the most part of four-and-a-half hours. Sometimes I’ll sharpen a box of pencils, other times I’ll put together some visiting packets; all in all, my job is equal parts thoughtless tasks, equal parts reading articles online, and, today, equal parts writing this column. For my time (and effort, I guess) I get paid more than nine dollars an hour.
