A female graduate student is in stable condition after she was attacked in her off-campus home just before midnight Wednesday, University officials said Thursday.
The Durham Police Department reported that the victim knew her assailant, and although no arrests have been made, they are seeking Durham resident David Hill in connection with their investigation.
Hill is believed to live at 1411 Sedgefield St., just minutes away from the victim's residence in the 1100 block of Lancaster Street.
DPD reported in a news release Thursday that Hill broke into the victim's home, inflicted serious injury and stole miscellaneous property. The victim was able to call 911 after Hill fled in her vehicle, a 2001 blue Subaru Forester with a Pennsylvania tag.
She was taken to the Duke University Hospital soon after officers arrived.
Hill is wanted for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, first-degree burglary, larceny after breaking/entering and motor vehicle theft.
Larry Moneta, vice president for student affairs, informed students of the attack via e-mail around 4:45 a.m. Thursday.
"Our staff are reaching out to others in her circle of contacts... to offer support, and we're working with the Graduate School Student Affairs staff to coordinate communications and support with the family," Moneta wrote in an e-mail to The Chronicle. "Otherwise, we're awaiting further word on her recovery and on the police investigation."

Evidently it was God's will that she be brutally assaulted... The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform...

We have to stop being silent about this! There comes a point where silence is acceptance. This woman was brutally attacked with a SAW by this piece of garbage and there hasn't been one peep by the media, or the professors, or the Duke Administration. (Continued…)

I read the WRAL story about the black man being arrested for assaulting a young woman with a saw. However, the article doesn't even mention that the young woman involved was a Duke student - just gives her address. (Continued…)

With all due respect, but where have you been for the past year and a half? Concern for true victims? Outrage over violent crimes? By now, any thoughtful individual could not help but come to the (correct) conclusion that Duke, with some very few exceptions, is an uncaring, self centered, shallow, callous, bigoted institution, intent on drawing in the white upper middle class, but run by individuals whose resentment and animosity has been on display for all to see. (Continued…)

I am the parent of a HS senior. He attends a very academically rigorous prep school outside of philly. I would never, ever allow him to even apply to duke. (Continued…)
