Continuing Coverage

from The Chronicle

The Duke community was rocked after allegations surfaced that three players on the men's lacrosse team raped, sodomized, kidnapped and choked an exotic dancer at a team party March 13.

In the wake of the allegations, neighbors protested, the 2006 season was cancelled and the coach resigned. Police arrested three players--who maintain their innocence--and their defense lawyers are speaking out against the character of the alleged victim.

After questions surfaced about the validity and lack of DNA evidence, the newly elected district attorney Mike Nifong dropped the rape charges in late December 2006. Nifong is is determined to press on with the other two charges--sexual assault and kidnapping--and a trial is set to begin in 2007. Duke is being forced to re-evaluate the culture that led up to the incident, and administrators admit the scandal will have repercussions on campus for several years.

The Chronicle will keep you informed with complete coverage. Check this page often for the latest stories and online extras.
