The armed person who was on or near the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus is now in custody.

Emergency sirens were activated Sunday afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m., signifying a "significant emergency or immediate health or safety threat" to the campus, according to an alert post on the UNC website Alert Carolina. All campus and classroom activities were temporarily suspended as a result. Community members were advised to go inside, close windows and doors and stay put until further notice.
