DNC Chair Tom Perez to speak at Duke next week

Tom Perez, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee and former U.S. Secretary of Labor, is set to speak on campus April 9.

Perez—who became the chair of the DNC in January 2017—will discuss civil rights, voter suppression and the evolution of the Democratic Party in the Terry Sanford Distinguished lecture, “Civil Rights and the People’s Party," according to a Sanford School release.

Deondra Rose, assistant professor of public policy and political science, will interview Perez.

“Chairman Perez has built a distinguished career advocating on the behalf of workers and fighting to protect our civil rights,” Rose said in the release. “Now, as head of the Democratic Party, he is committed to addressing issues like voter suppression and gerrymandering, which so often prevent voters from seeing their interests and concerns reflected in our two-party system.

The talk is part of a yearlong centennial celebration of Terry Sanford, president of the University from 1970-85, and is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on April 9 in Fleishman Commons at the Sanford School.
