After meeting with the four Young Trustee candidates and having the opportunity to learn about their view on Duke’s mission and its future, Duke Honor Council is thrilled to formally endorse Tanner Lockhead.
We believe that Lockhead’s previous experience in the boardroom along with his commitment to remain engaged with Duke and the local Durham community make him the most effective candidate for Young Trustee. Lockhead’s current position on the Institutional Advancement committee of the Board of Trustees has provided him with the requisite experience needed to serve effectively during the brief tenure afforded to the Young Trustee.
Furthermore, Lockhead’s proximity to the school and his explicit interest in remaining engaged with the Durham and local community will translate well into his ability to serve on the Board. By remaining in Durham after graduating, Lockhead will best be able to serve as a bridge between the students and the board. Lockhead’s current wide array of experiences such as in DSG and in Common Ground, has established his ability and desire to further cultivate knowledge of the student perspective.
Additionally, given Honor Council's role is to promote a culture of integrity on campus, we were excited by Lockhead's knowledge and experiences regarding the Duke Community Standard. We believe his work at bridging communities (e.g. through the LGBTQ+ Christian ministry he founded) coupled with how he has grounded his Duke experience in the larger Durham community represents an authentic and actionable relationship with the values that comprise the foundation of our university.
Honor Council is confident that Tanner Lockhead is equipped to be the most impactful and meaningful Young Trustee and we support his vision for bettering the Duke community.
