DUU hopes to finally give seniors a p-checks concert in K-Ville with headliner Wale

Rapper Wale will headline the p-checks concert Feb. 3.

Starting to get tired of living in a tent while your other friends have real beds? Need a silver lining after another cold night? The annual K-Ville concert—also known as p-checks—might help you out.

This year's concert—which will take place Feb. 3 at 8 p.m.—will feature rappers Wale and Kaiydo. Wale is known for his songs "Bad," "MY PYT" and "LoveHate Thing." An up-and-coming rapper, 19-year-old Kaiydo became popular because of his hit "Fruit Punch."

Senior David Soled, president of Duke University Union Campus Concerts, said his committee wanted the concert to feature artists who could create an electric atmosphere in K-Ville.

"People have been tenting, they've been outside, there's the game coming up, so you want to bring in an artist who's really going to get people excited," he said. "P-checks is like a huge party."

The concert is a main component of p-checks, the final step of the tenting process for students spending nights in K-Ville. Individuals must complete personal checks to earn wristbands so they can enter Cameron Indoor Stadium before the game against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Feb. 9.

Because the concert occurs during such a high-energy time on campus, electronic dance music groups, rap or hip hop artists work best, Soled explained. EDM group Cash Cash headlined the Heatwave concert in September, so DUU looked for a rap artist for p-checks.

This p-checks concert is the final chance for the senior class to have actually have a p-checks concert in K-Ville, Soled noted. Last year, rain forced the concert inside to Page Auditorium, and inclement weather the two years prior caused the concert to be cancelled.

Soled is hoping the weather this year will be better—the current prediction is 50 degrees and sunny (he's already checked). But the concert will go on rain or shine, because DUU has already booked Page Auditorium, even though that is not their preferred option.

"Page can't fit all the people, and it's not in K-Ville which is half the excitement," Soled said. "It's hard to have the same high energy."

The concert will feature food trucks, and DUU is also looking for ways to provide free food or drinks.

"It's gonna be a great time," Soled said. '"All students are invited whether you're tenting or not. For your friends who are tenting, it's a great time to support them and see what they've been doing."
